WEST BROOKFIELD – Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.’s office has reported that Matthew Locke of Ware has been arrested in the murder of Sara Bermudez, 38, of West Brookfield and her three children. Locke was indicted in East Brookfield District Court on four charges of murder, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Sara Bermudez was found murdered in her West Brookfield home March 1, 2018. Her three children, Madison, age 8, James, age 6 and Michael, age 2, were also murdered in the home. Bermudez and her children are survived by her husband, Moses Bermudez, who was in Californa for work at the time of the murders. Locke is the cousin of Moses Bermudez.
There was a fire at the crime scene that was self-extinguished before the victims were found and each victim sustained stab wounds.
Locke had been arrested several months ago for misleading investigators in an investigation in regard to potential gang involvment in the crime, his relationship to the victim and her family and his use of intoxicants. He had been held since that time.
“This investigation is very complex and remains active,” Early told reporters at a press conference September 5.
Assistant District Attorneys Christopher P. Hodgens and Brett F. Dillon are prosecuting the case.
Mr. Early praised the work of investigators, including the State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, West Brookfield Police, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and other units of the State Police. Police departments in Ware, Palmer and North Brookfield also contributed to the investigation.
