AUBURN — The Uxbridge Spartans cruised to a 50-26 victory over their hosts on Thursday night, securing a championship in the process.
By improving to 10-6 on the season, Uxbridge was crowned as the Southern Worcester County League’s B League Champions. This is the team’s first SWCL title since the 2014-15 season, and their third title of the decade.
The title quest seemed certain quickly in the game at Auburn High School, as the host Rockets were playing without one of their key players while one of Uxbridge’s has been playing some of his best hoops of the season. By halftime on Thursday night, the Spartans had already amassed more points than necessary to pick up the win over the Rockets.
Uxbridge was led by senior Scott Kaeller, who had 25 points on the night, nearly matching the output of the entirety of the Rockets offense. It appears Kaeller is playing his best basketball of the season right now, having scored a season-high 33 points on Tuesday against Grafton, and averaging nearly 27 points a game so far this month. Tyler Tedford chipped in with eight points for the Spartans.
Auburn was without senior guard Tyler Judice, whose season came to an untimely end on Monday night when he broke his ankle in a 67-59 Rockets victory over the Bartlett Indians. Though unable to play, Judice watched from the sideline on Thursday, sporting crutches and a boot to aid in his recovery.
Craigon Confer was Auburn’s top scorer in the loss, picking up eight points for the Rockets. Cam Bolduc added five while Matty Backlin and Max Joncas each contributed three points. Auburn is now 8-10 on the season.
The Spartans have a busy week ahead, playing their final three games of the regular season over a four-day span, beginning Monday at 7:00 p.m. against the visiting Northbridge Rams, then Wednesday at the Tantasqua Warriors at 6:30 p.m., and finally Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Douglas.
Auburn, losers of three of their last four games, returns to the court with a 5:00 p.m. contest against the visiting Oxford Pirates, and wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 15, at Tewksbury.
