WEST BROOKFIELD — Mark L. Sherman, 94, of West Brookfield died on Saturday, July 13 at his home.
Mark was predeceased by his best friend and loving companion of over 50 years, Joan Canole. He is survived by his sister, Joan Riebow of Cumming, GA, his niece, Lindsay Reeves and her husband Dave of Cumming, GA, his nephew, Mark Hicks and his wife Bonnie of Englewood, Fla., his nephew Jeff Hicks and his wife Ann of North Brookfield, and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. Mark was born October 1, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Warren D. and Norma M. (Mark) Sherman.
He grew up in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York spending summers on his grandfather’s farm in Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a navigator on a B-24 bomber flying 35 missions over Europe. After the war Mark graduated from MIT with a degree in engineering. He followed in his father’s footsteps into the petroleum industry working for both Mobil and Cities Service (now Citgo). In 1954 Mark bought a gasoline dealership in West Brookfield. Over the years he grew Sherman Oil, Inc., adding home heating oil delivery and convenience stores. He was a director of the Ware Trust Company for over ten years.
Mark loved his business, his family and especially his Joan. He will be remembered as an accomplished businessman, a wonderful older brother, a loving and generous uncle and great-uncle and a man of great intelligence and integrity.
A Funeral Service for Mark will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 11 a.m. in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main Street, in West Brookfield. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in West Brookfield immediately following the service. There are no calling hours.
