Henry (Pete) Mathieu Sr., 94

EASTHAMPTON — Henry (Pete) Mathieu Sr., passed away on August 4, at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. He was born July 12, 1924 in Southbridge, and was the son of the late Hermenegilde and Lydia (Poirier) Mathieu. He was predeceased by his nine older siblings: Armand, Jeanette, Theodore, Leo, Claire, Eugene, Victor, Claude and Lauretta.

Henry was married to Lorraine (Lariviere) Mathieu for 68 years until her passing on August 18, 2012. He is survived by a daughter and son; MaryAnn (Mathieu) Kohl of Lexington, Va. (Gary) and Henry (Hank) Mathieu Jr. of Hadley, (Susan Moran), 11 grandchildren: Mathieu Kohl, Julia Spadafora (Andrew), Bethany Chambers (Ryan), all of Utah; Ian Kohl (Holli) of New Mexico, Jared Kohl (Stefanie), Spencer Kohl (Elizabeth) of Virginia, Gordon Kohl (Carrie) of Vermont, Adam Kohl (Emily) of Alaska and Cameron Mathieu, Gregory Mathieu and Olivia Mathieu, all of Boston.

Henry was raised and educated in Southbridge, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II , serving in Hawaii. He was a graduate of the Stockbridge School in Amherst and attended on the GI Bill majoring in Arboriculture. He moved to Easthampton in 1951 and established the H.A. Mathieu Tree Company and he was elected as the Town Tree Warden for many years before becoming the Assistant Regional Director of Forests and Parks for the Berkshire Region for the Commonwealth of Mass. Henry became the City Forester for the City of Springfield from 1968 until his retirement in 1989 and was publicly credited with having made significant improvements to the beautification of Springfield through the planting of thousands of trees. He was also an active member and past president of the Massachusetts Tree Warden’s Association.

Henry’s funeral service will be held Saturday, August 11 at 10 a.m. at the Boucher-O’Brien Funeral Home, 7 Pleasant St. Easthampton, followed by burial with military honors in St. Brigid’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, August 10 from 5 to 7 p.m.
