UPDATE, 9/5/18: Dudley Town Manager Greg Balukonis tells The Citizen Chronicle after a long holiday weekend, “Overall, we are grateful nobody was injured.  Buildings can and will be repaired and I look forward to seeing work begin on the damaged area shortly.”

DUDLEY – A vehicle hit The Pearl L. Crawford Memorial Library in Dudley Thursday morning, Aug. 31, on the east side of the building. The building sustained exterior damage near parking spots adjacent to the building. The part of the building that was impacted houses the children’s’ room, so that room will be closed until further notice.

Library staff was not allowed to give comment the day of the accident and referred questions to the Town Administrator, Greg Balukonis. Balukonis was out of the office for Labor Day weekend at the time of our initial report. Upon returning to the work week, Balkonis reported to The Citizen Chronicle that a northern interior wall was damaged and is now “bowed inward into the children’s room.” Bookshelves and furniture sustained some damage as well.

“Overall, we are grateful nobody was injured.  Buildings can and will be repaired and I look forward to seeing work begin on the damaged area shortly,” Balukonis commented.

Balukonis said that the building would be evaluated by a structural engineer and that the town was not yet certain on a re-opening date for the children’s room.

The Dudley Police Department confirmed that the incident was due to an accident.

“This was an accident. The operator didn’t do anything wrong. It appears to be a malfunction of the car,” said Officer Chandler Boyd of the Dudley Police Department.

The Facebook page for the Pearl L.. Crawford Memorial Library posted a notice on the day of the incident that stated simply, “The children’s room is closed until further notice.” The post was created at 10:22 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30.

Another notice on the library’s Facebook page posted on the same day announced that the library would close at 5 p.m. Normally, the library is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

However, an early closure of the library for Thursday, Aug. 31, had been listed on the Pearl S. Crawford Memorial Library’s website along with other early closures or late openings previously scheduled for the next few weeks.  Library staff was unable to comment on whether or not the library had been previously scheduled to close early or if the closure was due to the accidental damage to the side of the building.
