MILFORD, Mass. — U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy III (D-4th) has endorsed Tom Merolli for State Senate in the Worcester and Norfolk district. Merolli, 28, is a Democrat from Mendon who currently serves as the town’s Assistant Treasurer, Economic Development Committee chair, and chair of the Mendon Democratic Town Committee.

“I believe Tom will be a great state senator, working diligently on behalf of his constituents. As a lifelong resident of the Blackstone Valley, he has a deep understanding of the issues that the people and families of this district face; issues like the environment, education and access to healthcare,” Kennedy said. “Tom knows how important it is to be vigilant to ensure the families of central Massachusetts have access to clean drinking water, and he understands how the lack of regulation and outdated water infrastructure have impacted the communities in the district.”

Kennedy is a three-term congressman who represents several towns in the Worcester and Norfolk State Senate district, including Bellingham, Hopedale, and Milford.

Merolli is a first-time candidate for elected office and is challenging incumbent Republican State Senator Ryan Fattman. Merolli is campaigning on a platform of supporting public schools and revising the Massachusetts school funding formula, protecting the environment and ensuring clean water for all, combating the opioid epidemic and creating more long-term addiction treatment facilities, and moving Massachusetts toward a single-payer healthcare system that will cut spending costs while increasing access for all citizens.

Tom has previously been endorsed by Congressmen Richard Neal (D-1st) and Congressman Jim McGovern (D-2nd) as well as former State Senator Dick Moore. He also received endorsements from the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, OPEIU Local 453, MassCOP, ELM (Environmental League of Massachusetts), MNA, Postal Workers Union, 1199 SEIU, Laborers 243, Sheet Metal Workers Local 63, SEIU 509, Teamsters 170, Greater Worcester Our Revolution, New England Carpenters Council, Carpenters Union Local 336, Roofers Union Local 33, LIUNA Local 272, Central MA Labor Council, Northern New England Laborers Council, Worcester Fitchburg Building Trades Council, OPEIU Local 600, American Federation of Teachers, and Run For Something.

“I’m writing today because I’m supporting Tom Merolli for State Senator and ask that you consider doing the same.

I believe Tom will be a great state senator, working diligently on behalf of his constituents. As a lifelong resident of the Blackstone Valley, he has a deep understanding of the issues that the people and families of this district face; issues like the environment, education and access to healthcare.

Tom knows how important it is to be vigilant to ensure the families of central Massachusetts have access to clean drinking water, and he understands how the lack of regulation and outdated water infrastructure have impacted the communities in the district.

Tom recognizes that our schools need and deserve more state funding, to ensure that our teachers and students have everything they need to succeed and make this region a better place to live and raise a family.

And finally, Tom knows that we have to keep up the fight to expand healthcare coverage. He has witnessed how a lack of access to healthcare can wreak havoc on families that are struggling to make ends meet.

I am proud to endorse Tom Merolli for the state senate and hope you will too.

Sincerely,
Joe Kennedy III”
