AUBURN — The road to the State Championship runs through this town, and the local team remains undefeated in their quest for the title.

The Auburn Intermediate All Star team is 3-0 after closing out their game against Needham in the sixth inning on Sunday evening.

The energy both on and off the field was electrifying as local fans surrounded the field in blue t-shirts and the crowd’s roars echoed as Riley Landry took the mound and held Needham to no runs in the third inning.

The cheers continued as the Auburn bats came alive in the bottom of the third inning. With Needham leading 3-1, Ryan Hunter led off the frame with a single to the right-center gap and stole second base before being advanced to third base on a single by Landry. Landry followed with a stolen base before Isaac Swedberg drove in Hunter with a base hit, pushing Landry to third base. Swedberg then swiped second base before Garrett Papierski delivered a RBI single, putting runners on the corners and tying the game. Needham nearly wiggled out of the jam without further damage by retiring the next two batters, bringing Tyler Cook to the plate in a difficult spot. Cook swatted the second pitch for a three-run home run, putting Auburn up 6-3.

The offense continued in the final innings of the game, exploding for a 16-6 win.

With only two more games to go in this series, Auburn is sure to appear in the top four, earning them a spot to play in the semi-finals for the State Championship on July 13. Auburn coach Corey Handfield credited teamwork as the key to the club’s successes thus far.

“It takes all 12 boys to win these games,” Handfield said. “These boys have worked hard, it’s nice to see that pay off.”

Handfield and the coaching staff expressed their gratitude for the local support of the team. The Auburn Intermediate All Stars return to the field on Saturday, July 6, in Sudbury, before returning home on Monday, July 8 for a game at the Pappas Recreational Facility.

The semifinals and State Championship will be played at Pappas in Auburn on July 13 and July 14.
