SFD: Driver escapes accident, blaze without injury

STURBRIDGE — A truck driver managed to escape injury after an accident on Interstate 84 resulted in the trailer tractor unit’s cabin becoming fully engulfed in flames on Monday morning.

A tractor trailer bearing the National Freight logo crashed at shortly before 7 a.m., hitting a tree off the side of Interstate 84 East prior to Exit 1. Massachusetts State Police and the Sturbridge Fire Department responded to the scene, where the no injuries were reported.

The Sturbridge Fire Department received a precautionary request for an ambulance from State Police at 7:01 a.m., though no first responders were yet on scene. As units arrived, a fire engine was called to the scene to extinguish a fire that had started in the engine compartment of the rig, according to the fire department.

State Police reported the truck’s cabin had become fully engulfed by 7:30 a.m. and eastbound traffic was detoured through a weigh station as the crews battled the blaze. The fire was extinguished around 8 a.m., officials reported.
