SOUTHBRIDGE — A Violet Avenue man has been arrested for his role in a drive-by shooting that occurred last month.

The Southbridge Police Department announced on Wednesday that the arrest of Walter Cruz, 37, took place on Friday, October 9, at approximately 1:42 p.m. The drive-by shooting occurred on the evening of Sunday, September 27 in the area of Whitetail Circle.

According to police, Cruz was arrested Friday on a warrant after an investigation by local police detectives. He has been charged with assault with intent to kill and is being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, October 16 at Dudley District Court.

Police report the drive-by shooting took place at approximately 9 p.m. on September 27, resulting in law enforcement receiving “numerous E911 calls reporting shots fired” near Whitetail Circle, a cul-de-sac near Ashland Avenue.

Officers immediately responded to the area and identified an address believed to have been the target of a drive-by shooting, according to the police department posting. No injuries were reported at the time, and police noted they believed the matter to be “an isolated incident.” Police also stressed at the time of the shooting that there was no evidence to support any fears “there is a threat to our community as this was likely not random.”
