Madaio killed in Route 9 accident Monday morning
SPENCER — A Paxton man was killed on Monday morning after a wayward crowbar penetrated his vehicle’s windshield, struck him in the head, and resulted in a fatal accident.
John F. Madaio, aged 63, was driving eastbound on Route 9 when the accident occurred, shortly before 10 a.m., according to a statement by the Spencer Police Department. Police said Madaio’s 2011 Toyota Rav4 was in the vicinity of 6 Main Street “when a crow bar was kicked-up or fell from another vehicle.” The crowbar “struck and penetrated the windshield” of the Rav4, hitting Madaio in the head, according to the police statement. After being struck by the crowbar, Madaio’s vehicle left the road, struck a curbing and an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot of Crestview Condominiums on Main Street. The vehicle continued over an embankment before coming to a stop.
Police said first responders had to break the vehicle’s passenger window to gain access to Madaio, who was transported to Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Madaio was a well-known defense attorney in Worcester.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. issued a statement saying Madaio worked as a former assistant district attorney and that his office was saddened to hear of his tragic passing.
“John was a great father, great lawyer and extremely well-respected member of the DA’s office for more than 15 years, and also worked as a personal injury attorney for the San Antonio community” said Early. “More recently as a defense attorney, John was a dedicated advocate for his clients.”
Accident Reconstruction is being conducted by Officers from the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council. Spencer Police were assisted by the State and East Brookfield Police Departments along with the Spencer Fire Department and East Brookfield EMS.
