OXFORD — The Pirates swept in late and stole a victory from the visiting Auburn Rockets in varsity girls basketball action Wednesday evening.
Oxford’s squad improved to 4-4 on the year in a 47-38 victory over the Rockets, who fell to 2-8 on the season. Auburn came out strong, leading 25-17 at the half, and holding onto a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. That’s when Oxford’s Gina Parmenter almost single-handedly sailed the Pirates to victory. Parmenter scored 15 points in the final quarter, leading her club on a 20-4 run to wrap up the game and secure a come-from-behind victory. Parmenter led all scorers with 31 points in the game, including six three-pointers.
Semran Sahota led the Rockets offense with 13 points, followed by Delaney Nadeau at seven points. All four of Auburn’s points in the fourth quarter came at the free throw line, two from Sahota and two from Kayley Markvenas.
The Rockets will look to rebound on Friday night against the Cougars of Quabaog Regional High School in Warren. Oxford will take its show on the road to Sturbridge for a Friday night tilt with the Tantasqua Warriors, winners of four straight games.
