Bay Path battery leads charge against Aztecs

MARLBOROUGH — The Bay Path Minutemen improved to 4-0 with an 8-3 road win over the Assabet Valley Aztecs.

Bay Path catcher Devan Wetherbee set the tone both behind the plate and in the batter’s box, picking up two hits, including a triple, with two runs scored, knocking in a run, and stealing a base. Defensively, the junior backstop threw out a pair of Assabet Valley baserunners in the first inning, causing the Aztecs to apply the brakes for remainder of the game.

Her battery-mate, Minutemen pitcher Sarah Gosselin, worked a complete game, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits and two walks. Gosselin, a freshman, struck out eight batters over her seven innings of work. Alexis Atwood got the ball for the Aztecs, striking out five while walking two and surrendering 14 hits over seven innings.

Freshman shortstop Kyleigh Sutherland went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI, two runs scored, and three stolen bases for Bay Path.
