GRAFTON — Newman C. Allen, 91, formerly of Grafton and Englewood, FL, passed away on Monday, Feb. 19, in the Southbridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, after a long illness.

His wife, Evelyn R. (Rocco) Allen, died in 2014. He leaves his two sons, James J. Allen and his wife Sandra of Charlton and Joseph J. Allen and his wife Meg of Rockport; his six grandchildren, Timothy Allen, Rebecca Terzian, Jessica Gregorczyk, Jody Allen, Heather Sodel, and Crystal Leveille; nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his foster parents who raised him, George and Laura Picard.  He was also predeceased by his brother, George Picard and his two sisters, Lillian Cormier and Florence Yates.  He was born in Holden the son of Charles and Beulah (Fletcher) Allen.  Newman was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, serving on the Greenland air base.

Newman formerly co-owned and operated Orbit Transportation Trucking Co. for 25 years, retiring many years ago. He previously worked for various trucking companies in the area.  He was a member of the Teamsters Local 170 in Worcester.  He was also a member of the VFW Post 1497 in Grafton and the American Legion in Millbury.  Newman was also at one time active in the Pop Warner Football program in Grafton.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 11 am in St. Mary’s Church of the St. John Paul II Parish, 263 Hamilton St., Southbridge.  Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Grafton, will be held at the convenience of the family.  A calling hour in the funeral home will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., before the Mass.
