AUBURN — Carlis E. “Ed” Motes, 98, of Auburn and most recently of Hubbardston, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 11, 2021 in the comfort of his daughter’s home.
Born and raised in Coffeeville, Alabama, Ed was one of eight children born to the late Easter C. and Myrtie S. Motes. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II for three years until his honorable discharge in 1945. Ed then relocated to Massachusetts, where he met and married his first wife, the late Helen T. (Powers) Motes. He worked for many years for the Medfield School System as a custodian, and was well-loved by the students.
In his free time, Ed enjoyed gardening, listening to music (especially Big Band and Country-Western), playing bingo, dancing, cooking, and baking pies.
Along with his parents and his first wife, he was also predeceased by his second wife, Rita (Joubert) Motes.
Ed leaves his children: Carolyn Surowiec and her husband Thomas, of Vero Beach, FL, James Motes and his wife Brenda, of Sebastian, FL, Elaine Peterson, of Hubbardston, and Patrick Motes and his wife Patricia, of Surprise, AZ; his grandchildren: Cathy Motes, of Palm Bay, FL, Keith Motes, of Tucson, AZ, Colby Peterson, of Watertown, Megan-Jane Peterson, of Hubbardston, Alexander Motes of Everett, WA and Benjamin Motes of Surprise, AZ; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; his surviving step-siblings, Barbara Haden, Marvin Motes, and Dick Motes, all of Mississippi; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Service and burial will be held privately, due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. There will be a Celebration of his Life, date to be determined. The Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, Auburn, is honored to be assisting with arrangements.
