SOUTHBRIDGE – Anarae Bean Zebryk was born on July 29, 1984, with a brilliant mind, creative spirit, humor, and a tender, loving heart. She took a huge piece of our heart with her when she left us on August 10, 2018. She attended Southbridge Public Schools, as well as QCC and Nichols College. She leaves behind her parents Jay and Anita, her two brothers Nicholas and Justyn, and her maternal grandmother Anna Bean. She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was wise beyond her years, with such beauty, depth and wit. She loved people and impacted many who loved her dearly as a “good old soul”.

Anarae displayed incredible strength while heroically fighting an addiction to heroin. What started as something recreationally, which she could control, eventually morphed into a demon that ended up taking her precious life. Her struggle is over; she is finally at peace. Let’s continue to remember the Anarae we all knew and loved! She had been sober for almost two years but her disease still had a powerful hold on her. If only she had recognized the beauty and strength that everyone else saw in her. It has been a very long, hard, and agonizing battle against her demon. Addiction, however, won the war.
To the person who doesn’t understand addiction, she is just another statistic that chose to make a bad decision; a very uneducated statement indeed, but none the less that is what they will say, along with many other hurtful statements. So be it! We know that as a child, she never aspired to grow up to be an addict. For people who don’t understand this indiscriminate disease, remember that this is our baby, our youngest, our child, our daughter and our everything! She was a sister, a niece, a granddaughter, a friend, a cousin, a human being with an addiction.
She turned to drugs to make her feel normal like everyone else. Heroin told her “I can make you feel accepted, I can make you feel alright, I can make you feel worthy, I can make you feel normal, I can make you feel loved, I can make you feel nothing and make you feel like everything will be okay.” What it didn’t tell her was how it would devastate and ravage her, take her job and leave her penniless, take her home and make her homeless. How heartbreaking it was to see it take her sparkle and smile, her humor, her friends and how it would eventually take her life.
We need to stop talking about this epidemic and put an end to it. Our baby girl may not be here physically, but she is working miracles from Heaven. She could not make us more proud. We love you Anarae. Shine down on all of us and keep working those miracles from Heaven.

  1. So very sorry for your loss. I too have lost a loved one to addiction. I commend your family for having the resolve and courage to speak openly about this scourge that took your loved one and so many others. God bless you.

  2. Jay and Anita , there are no words of course anyone can say except that we are so touched by your strength . Nicholas and Justyn sounds like you loss a beautiful sister . My family has been dealing with the pain of addiction and substance use and I know what terror and helplessness it brings especially to the parents . I believe your beautiful Anarae is an angel watching her family reaching out to other people suffering from this disease and she s proud of you . You know you are not alone Jay and Anita . God Bless you .

    Hope Schmitt

  3. This was the most honest and heartfelt obituary I have ever read. I am truly sorry your daughter has lost her fight to the demon and its reasons like this while I continue to fight hard for 3 years to stay sober. It is a battle and depression makes it so much more difficult. I will keep your daughter and family in my thoughts and prayers. My only hope is that people will take this as a wake up call and try and fight harder. Dont let anyone’s negativity bring you down ever! She is a beautiful angel!
